Why I Am Running for Congress - Homer "Chip" Markel for Congress

Dedication to Our Country

I have spent my life trying to help others and work collaboratively to create positive change. During my service in the United States Navy, a career in the Illinois Department of Corrections, and work as a Union Activist, I have always tried to help people.

In the Navy, I trained newly enlisted servicemembers and offered guidance, advice, and support in the advancement of their careers.

Department of Corrections & Union Negotiations

A year before I began working with the Illinois Department of Corrections, an officer at Menard Correctional Center was killed by an inmate. The level of violence at Menard and other prisons in the Department of Corrections was extreme. I became active in the union to help improve the safety and security of my fellow officers and support staff within the prison system. As a result of my work, along with other union members, we successfully lobbied for the Tamms Closed Maximum Security Facility which was built in 1998. Following the opening of this facility, the level of inmate violence throughout the Illinois Department of Corrections dramatically reduced.

In addition to working diligently to provide a safer work environment, I was active in many successful contract negotiations which greatly enhanced the quality of life for employees and their families. Through these negotiations, we secured wage increases, improvements in medical coverage and pension benefits, and resolved other job-related issues.

A Voice for Southern Illinois

Throughout my life and career, I have believed in the power of determination and cooperation to make positive changes in the world around me. It is time for Congress to work together in representing the American people. The only way we can do that is by electing officials who have a passion for serving others and are motivated to see America thrive. It’s time to vote for an end to political extremism, towing the party line, and refusal to work with members of other political parties. Serving the American people is what Congress is elected to do, and exactly what I plan to do when elected as the Representative for the 12th Congressional District.

My motivations are not financial. I enjoy my life as a retiree. But I cannot sit by and watch the country that I love continue to crumble. It is time we have a Representative who wants to do the right thing for the right reason. It is time for a change! Together, we can do this!
